Product Type: Sweaters

The Araya splits right down the middle. One half is coral pink striped in red, the other is mauve striped in cream, and the two meet on an oversized crewneck body that hangs loose over jeans. Color-block and stripe in a single piece, it can carry an outfit with no help from anything else.

  • Two palettes in one knit, so shoes or a bag can match either half.
  • Oversized on purpose: your usual letter size already gives the slouch in the photos.
  • Heavy, swinging drape from a blend of 50% viscose, 28% polyester and 22% polyamide.
  • Plain crew neck that stays put, leaving the pattern to do all the talking.

How an Oversized Sweater Should Hang

An oversized sweater looks right when the shoulder seam drops toward the upper arm and the hem stops around the hip. It looks sloppy when it also swallows the hands and the seat. Stay with your usual letter size and the cut does the oversizing for you. Sizing up doubles the volume and folds the split under extra fabric, so the two halves lose their clean edge. Each letter size covers two women's numeric sizes: S is 4 and 6, M is 8 and 10, L is 12 and 14, and XL is 16 and 18.

Matching Accessories to One Half

The trick with a split sweater is to choose a side. Coral and red want warm company: tan suede, gold hoops, white sneakers. Mauve and cream lean cool: silver, soft gray, a lilac bag. Picking one side keeps the outfit to two ideas instead of three, and the sweater stays the star.

Bottoms are simpler. Mid-blue jeans, as in the photos, balance both halves, and slim black pants make the red stripes pop. Narrow bottoms balance the volume best, and a wide leg works too when the hem ends at the hip.

Why Viscose Feels Heavier

Viscose is a denser fiber than acrylic, so the same amount of knit weighs more and falls closer to the body. That weight is why the hem swings when you walk instead of standing stiffly away from you, and why an oversized cut in this blend looks relaxed rather than boxy. It also wrinkles less in a drawer than a lighter knit.

Coral and Mauve with Denim

Is mauve a warm or cool color? Mauve is a grayed pink-purple, which puts it on the cool side here, while coral is warm. Since the split runs down the front, one half of each always sits near the face, so it suits warm and cool coloring alike.

Where does an oversized sweater end on a petite frame? Lower, often at the top of the thigh. A half tuck at the front, or sleeves pushed up past the wrist, brings the proportions back in line.

What should go under it on a cold day? A fitted long-sleeve tee or a thin turtleneck. The roomy body takes a layer without pulling, and a cream turtleneck repeats the cream stripe at the collar.
