Product Type: Bracelets

The Riya cuff is a band of small gold tone metal beads, woven row upon row with colored cotton thread until it forms a wide, flexible bracelet with a lace-like texture. Rows of oval beads run around the wrist, the thread showing between them as a fine line of color, and a round metal bead fastens through a thread loop at the side. It is the sort of bracelet people reach out to touch, and India Women's Co-op, a group of women artisans working around Delhi, makes it.

  • Four thread colors. Black, Steel (a soft blue gray), White and Wine, each with the same gold tone beads.
  • Wide but light. 1.5 inches deep, yet woven, so it bends with the wrist instead of sitting stiff.
  • Side closure. The bead and loop sit on the outer edge, where they look like part of the design.

Wide Cuff Bracelet Sizing in Inches

The maker lists the cuff at 7 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. A bracelet usually wants between half an inch and a full inch more than the wrist it sits on, so the Riya suits wrists of roughly 6 to 6.5 inches, a common range for women. Measure just above the wrist bone with a soft tape or a strip of paper; on a smaller wrist it rides lower toward the hand, which suits a wide cuff anyway.

How to Wear a Cuff Bracelet This Wide

A wide cuff bracelet is a statement on its own, so give it a clear stage. Push sleeves to the elbow, leave the other wrist bare or wear a slim watch there, and keep earrings small. Pick the thread color by the clothes it will meet most: black frames the beads sharply against dark denim and black knits, white turns summer linen and cream into a soft monochrome, Wine warms up gray and navy, and Steel sits nicely with blue shirts and chambray.

Because the band is woven, it moves with the wrist when you type or carry a bag, and the beads click softly against each other rather than against the desk.

Caring for Thread and Beads

Cotton thread drinks water and the beads are zinc alloy, so this is a bracelet that stays dry. Take it off before washing hands, swimming or a shower, and keep perfume and lotion clear of it. To freshen it, run a dry cloth over the beads and let the cuff rest flat in a box rather than hanging, which keeps the weave even.

Riya Cuff Questions

Which thread color hides wear best? Black and Wine stay looking fresh the longest; White is the brightest of the four and shows makeup or denim dye first, so it rewards a little extra care.

Can the closure loosen? The loop is thread and relaxes a little with use. Slip the bead through fully each time and it holds; a loop that has stretched can be eased back by twisting it gently before fastening.

Is it heavy on the wrist? Less than it looks. The weave leaves open space between beads, so it weighs far less than a solid metal cuff of the same width.
