Most of a day's moisture is lost in about eight minutes, and they are the eight minutes you spend in the shower. An ordinary wash strips the surface fats along with everything else, which is why a cleanser matters more than any single moisturizer to skin that already struggles to hold water.

  • The undoing step. A stripping wash cancels out whatever went on the night before.
  • It rinses away. Everything else in this line stays on; this one leaves completely.
  • Shea and lanolin. Present to leave something behind rather than to clean.
  • Judge it by tightness. If skin feels tight afterward, the wash took too much.

The Shower Is the Leak

Surface lipids are what keep water inside skin, and detergent removes them because that is what detergent does. On most people they rebuild within hours. Hot water dissolves surface fats faster than warm water and does it over a larger area. Warm rather than hot, and short rather than long, does more for dry skin than any product choice. Pat dry instead of rubbing, and put the leave-on step on within a couple of minutes while the surface still holds a film of water.

Where a Cleanser Cannot Help

Nothing that rinses off can do the work of something that stays on, so this replaces a body wash and never a moisturizer. Skin that has cracked open belongs with a clinician deciding the routine rather than with a shelf of cosmetics. And anyone who reacts to wool should know lanolin comes from it, which makes a small test on the wrist a sensible first move.

Questions About the Gentle Cleanser

Can it replace an ordinary body wash? That is exactly what it is for. Using it alongside a stripping wash defeats the point of buying it.

Should skin feel squeaky afterward? No. Squeaky means the surface fats went down the drain. Comfortable and slightly soft is what you want.

Does it lather much? Less than a detergent wash, and that is deliberate rather than a shortcoming.
