The Clare is a khaki chunky cardigan scattered with raised cream sherpa stars, front, back and down the sleeves. It buttons up a deep V with big wooden-look buttons, and two front pockets give cold hands somewhere to hide.

  • Raised sherpa stars you can feel, fleecy and soft against the knit around them.
  • Buttons top to hem, so it works alone as a top or hangs open as a layer.
  • Front pockets roomy enough for your hands, as the side photo shows.
  • Khaki base that behaves like a warm neutral and lets the stars carry the look.

Chunky Cardigan, Buttoned or Open

A chunky cardigan earns double duty when it buttons. Done up over a camisole, the deep V becomes the neckline and the cardigan becomes the whole top; open over a tee, it is the cozy layer in the photos, worn with light jeans and a coffee in hand. Buttoning only the middle two gives you a soft waist without losing the slouch.

The maker describes the fit as laid-back and slouchy, so your usual size gives that easy drape. Each letter size covers two women's numeric sizes: S is 4 and 6, M is 8 and 10, L is 12 and 14, and XL is 16 and 18. Choose the smaller of two sizes only if it will mostly be worn buttoned as a top.

Caring for Sherpa Stars

Sherpa is a fleecy pile, and pile has two enemies: heat and fabric softener. Heat flattens and mats the fibers, and softener coats them so they clump. Turn the cardigan inside out, wash it in cold water on the delicate setting, and dry it flat. Once dry, a soft brush or your fingertips fluff the stars right back up. Underneath the stars, the knit blends 42% acrylic with 30% polyester and 28% polyamide, so it dries faster than wool would.

Khaki, Cream and Denim

Khaki and cream already sit together on the sweater, so pull everything else from the same family. Light-wash jeans keep it soft, as in the photos; brown suede boots and a tan bag make it feel like a weekend in the country. Black pants work too, and they make the cream stars look brighter by contrast. Keep prints elsewhere to a minimum: the stars are the print.

Sherpa Stars on Khaki Knit

Do the sherpa stars add warmth? A little, right where they sit. The pile traps a thin layer of air across the chest, back and sleeves where the stars cluster, while the chunky knit does most of the work.

Which tops sit well under a deep V? A camisole or fitted tank if you will button it, so nothing shows at the neckline; a crew tee if you will wear it open. A thin turtleneck turns it into a winter outfit without adding bulk.

Will the stars catch on a bag strap? Pile can rough up where a strap rubs all day. Carrying the bag in your hand or on the opposite shoulder now and then keeps the stars on that side looking as soft as the rest.
