A four-line joke printed on a crewneck, which is more text than anything else in this range carries. The setup runs across two lines, the turn arrives on the third, and the last line is the one people repeat. Because there is so much of it, the design needs a plain ground to stay readable — which is exactly what the four colorways give it.

Who This Joke Lands With

Wives and mothers, and it is affectionate rather than bitter — the challenge in the line is somebody the wearer chose or raised. That is what separates it from the genre of complaint merchandise: nobody is being escaped from, they are being described. It reads as warm to the person it is about, which is the test a joke of this kind has to pass.

How A Long Print Behaves

Text-heavy designs live or die on line spacing rather than on size. This one is set with the emphasis lines in heavy capitals and the connecting words smaller between them, so the eye takes the shape first and the sentence second. From across a room you register a block of type; at conversational distance you read it. A design this wordy printed at a single weight would be unreadable at both distances.

Four Colors For A Wordy Print

Black, athletic heather, heather prism peach and mauve. Black gives the highest contrast and is where the type reads fastest. The two soft tones, peach and mauve, pull the whole thing gentler, which suits a joke that is fond of its subject. Athletic heather is the compromise and the one that will be worn most.

Measurements For The Sizes We Stock

A unisex crewneck, cut generously through the body. Every figure below is in inches and taken on the garment laid flat, not on the body.

Garment measurements in inches, for the sizes stocked here
Size Chest, flat Chest, around Length Sleeve
Small 20 40 26 33.5
Medium 22 44 27 34.5
Large 24 48 28 35.5
X-Large 26 52 29 36.5
XX-Large 28 56 30 37.5
XXX-Large 30 60 31 38.5

The second chest column is the first one doubled — the room you actually have around you, with a layer underneath included. Sleeve is measured from the back of the neck out to the cuff, which is why the figure looks large for a sleeve. Width climbs two inches per size while length climbs one, so the larger sizes get wider faster than they get longer.

Fleece, Cuffs And Washing

Cotton and polyester fleece, brushed inside and smooth on the face so a dense print has a flat surface to sit on. Banded cuffs and hem hold the edges in. Wash cool and inside out: the brushed inner face is what pills, and pilling shows up first as a haze around printed areas rather than on the plain fleece.

Line Spacing, Layering And Gifting

Does the whole joke fit on the chest? Yes, and it is set to be read as a block rather than scanned line by line. That is why it works on a crewneck, where the chest is uninterrupted, better than it would on a zipped front.

Can it be worn over a collared shirt? A crewneck is the one sweatshirt shape that can. The collar sits above the neckline instead of fighting a hood, and the generous body takes the extra layer without pulling.

Is it a safe gift from a husband or child? Unusually, yes. The joke casts the wearer as the one coping, so it flatters the person receiving it rather than the person giving it.
