Product Type: Boots

A puffer boot borrows its build from a puffer jacket: a padded shell outside and something warm inside. Soda's Snow-S pairs that shell with a faux fur lining, an elastic toggle closure and a platform sole about 1.25 inches thick, in a pale neutral Soda calls light stone beige.

  • 1.25 inch platform. That much sole sits between your foot and cold, wet ground.
  • Faux fur lining. The warm layer is built in instead of left to your socks.
  • Elastic toggle closure. Slide the toggle to snug the cord, slide it back to get your foot out.
  • Pale beige shell. A light neutral that goes with black leggings, blue denim and a bright ski jacket alike.

What Puffer Snow Boots Are For

Snow boots like this pair are made for the winter most people actually walk through: shoveled sidewalks, slushy parking lots and a cold wait for the train. The padded shell and the lining handle the cold. Soda lists Snow-S as waterproof, and the toggle is the part you control: pull the elastic cord snug and the gap around your leg, where falling snow drops in, is closed. Warm, padded and easy to cinch is the whole idea of the shape.

Why the Platform Matters in Slush

A puddle has to be deeper than the sole before water reaches the upper at all, and here the sole is about 1.25 inches thick. That covers the gutter slush and meltwater you step through at every crosswalk. The same thickness works as insulation. Frozen pavement pulls heat out through the bottom of a shoe, and more sole between you and the ground means warmer feet when you are standing still outdoors.

Socks and Size for Snow-S

Soda lists Snow-S as true to size. It is made in US women's 5.5 to 11 with half sizes up to 8.5, so a 9.5 orders the 10 and a 10.5 orders the 11. Man-made uppers do not stretch with wear, so the fit on day one is the fit you keep. With a lining already inside, one mid-weight sock is plenty. Doubling up thick socks uses the toe room that keeps feet warm, because warmth comes from trapped air and squeezed toes run cold.

Drying, Pants and First Snow

How do you dry faux fur lined boots? Loosen the toggle all the way, stuff each boot with newspaper or a dry towel for a few hours, then let them finish at room temperature. Keep them off radiators and out of the dryer: direct heat mats faux fur and can warp a man-made upper.

Which pants work with puffer boots? Leggings and slim jeans tuck inside, and the toggle closes over them so no skin is left between hem and boot. Straight or wide pants go over the outside instead; the padded shaft is bulky, and loose fabric forced into it leaves a lump at the ankle.

When should I buy snow boots? Before the first storm. Interest in snow boots in the United States starts climbing in September and peaks in December and January, which is when everyone remembers at once. A pair already by the door in November turns the first snowfall into a non-event.
