The Lining Is Where The Dress Actually Ends

In tulle, lace or an open weave, the outer fabric is sheer and the lining underneath is what sets the real hemline. A skirt that looks a certain length on the rail is only that length where the lining reaches; beyond that it is transparent. On a floor-length piece this barely registers. At mini length it decides whether the dress is wearable.

So the number to find is the lining length, not the dress length, and the two are almost never given together. If only one measurement is listed for a sheer mini, it is the outer layer, and the lining will be shorter.

Why The Top Half Carries Everything

• A corset or structured bodice does the shaping. With no long skirt to balance against, the definition has to come from the bodice or it does not exist.
• Sleeves change the register completely. A ruffled or puff sleeve on a mini reads as daywear; a bare shoulder on the same length reads as evening. The hem is identical in both cases.
• Embellishment concentrates. The same quantity of sequins covers a far greater proportion of a mini than of a maxi, which is why a mini is the easiest length to overdo.

Movement At A Short Length

A short skirt climbs when you walk, and the cause is friction against the leg rather than a fault in the cut. Weight is what stops it: a lined poplin or a beaded hem stays put because it has something pulling it down, while an unlined light knit does not. This is why a knit mini benefits from a slip in a way a woven one does not.

Lining does the same job for a different reason. A lining sits against the skin and lets the outer fabric slide over it instead of gripping, so a lined mini in a light cloth stays put better than an unlined one in a heavier cloth. If a dress is described as unlined at this length, that is the single most useful thing in the description.

Reading It Against The Longer Lengths

A mini is not a shortened version of the same dress. It is the length that shows the most leg and the least construction, so it carries the least formality and the most immediacy, which is exactly what makes it the right answer for a birthday and the wrong one for a ceremony. Where an occasion needs the opposite of that, the formal gown pages are the place to start instead.
