No print means nothing distracts from the shape. The Ashlyn is a solid cotton maxi dress with a smocked bodice under a V-neck, flutter cap sleeves, a high waist and a ruffled flounce at the hem, with pockets. It comes in three colors: light pink, black and red.

  • Three solid colors. Light pink for day, black for evening, red for a party.
  • Smocking through the bodice. Stretchy rows fit the ribcage and hold the V-neck in place.
  • Flounce at the hem. A deep ruffle gives the skirt movement without tiers.

Light Pink, Black or Red

Each color makes a different dress. Light pink is soft and romantic for brunches and garden parties. Black is the most adaptable: dress it up with gold for an evening or down with sandals for a beach town. Red is the one that turns heads at a summer party or a December dinner. A solid color lets jewelry, shoes and a bag do the styling, so one dress can look different every time you wear it.

Solid colors also photograph well. Without a print, the shape of the bodice, the flutter sleeves and the flounce show clearly in every picture.

Steaming a Solid Cotton Maxi

The fabric is 100% cotton, which is soft and cool against the skin. It also creases more visibly than a print, since there is no pattern to hide the lines. A steamer smooths it in minutes; hang it on a hanger, steam from the hem upward and let it dry before you put it on. Avoid steaming the smocking flat, as heat on the elastic rows can relax them.

Wash dark colors inside out in cold water to keep the black deep and the red bright.

Flutter Sleeves and Pockets

The flutter sleeves are short ruffles across the shoulder, so they cover it without the warmth of a full sleeve. Pockets sit in the side seams. The flounce at the hem adds swing when you walk, which keeps a solid dress from looking flat.

It comes in women's S (4/6), M (8/10), L (12/14) and XL (16/18), so a size 10 orders the M and a 14 orders the L. Choose by your bust, since the smocked bodice stretches across the ribs.

Smocked Cotton Maxi in Three Colors

Is the black too heavy for summer? Not for an evening or a shaded day. In full midday sun black cotton warms up faster than the pink, so save it for after five; with tan sandals and straw it still looks summery rather than severe.

Which of the three suits a wedding guest? Light pink for a daytime ceremony. Red can pull focus in the photos, and black suits an evening reception better than a morning one.

Does a regular bra show? Rarely. The cap sleeves cover most of the shoulder, so a bra with thin straps usually stays hidden under the ruffles.
