Product Type: Maxi Dress

One bare shoulder is the simplest way to make a long dress look like an occasion. This pink floral maxi has a single strap over the left shoulder, a bodice smocked all the way around so it grips without a second strap, and a ruffle that flares out at the bottom. The print mixes hot pink, lilac and soft orange blooms in loose watercolor shapes.

  • Grip without straps. The smocked bodice holds the neckline where you set it, front and back.
  • A diagonal line. The neckline runs corner to corner, which draws the eye up toward the face.
  • Ruffle at the hem. The last tier flares, so the skirt swings rather than hangs.

The Diagonal Across the Bodice

A one-shoulder neckline works because it is asymmetric. Straight necklines draw a horizontal line across the chest; this one slopes from the strap on the left down under the right arm, and the eye follows that slant up to the shoulder and the face. It adds height to the upper body without adding a single inch of fabric, which is why the cut turns up so often at evening events.

The smocking is what makes the cut practical. Elastic rows run around the whole bodice, so the side without a strap is held by the fabric itself rather than by boning or a tight band, and you can sit, dance and hug without hitching it up.

Jewelry for a Bare Shoulder

Leave the neck empty. A necklace fights the diagonal line and slides toward the low side all evening. Put the sparkle in earrings instead, and let them be bigger than usual: a drop or a hoop next to a bare shoulder has room to be seen. A cuff or a stack of bangles on the bare arm balances the strap on the other side.

Pink, lilac and orange together read warm and bright, so gold jewelry and a natural straw or tan bag finish it with no extra effort. Silver works too, as long as the bag and shoes stay neutral.

Polyester for Long Evenings

The fabric is all polyester, which keeps the bright pink from fading in the sun and dries quickly if a sudden shower catches you between car and venue. It also resists the deep creases a long dress picks up during a seated dinner, so the ruffle at the hem looks fresh when you stand for the last dance.

It comes in women's S (4/6), M (8/10), L (12/14) and XL (16/18), so a size 10 orders the M and a 14 orders the L. Size by your bust; the smocking stretches to fit around the ribs and back.

Pink One Shoulder Maxi Evenings

Does a strapless bra work under it? Yes, and it is the usual choice. A nude strapless style disappears under the smocking; a clear-strap bra tends to catch the light on the bare shoulder.

Which shoulder is bare? The right one. The strap sits on the left shoulder, so a crossbody bag worn from the left hip keeps its strap from crossing the bare side.

What shoes suit the ruffle hem? A block-heel sandal or a clear mule, because a heel lifts the ruffle off the floor and keeps it from catching underfoot.
