A soft leather tote bag does what a structured one cannot: it folds against your side, slides under a plane seat and looks better the more it slumps. Alpine is TORONATA's version for women, with riveted handles, a front pocket, a shoulder strap and a soft lining, in two sizes and in Tan or Dark Brown.

  • Soft, unstructured leather. It drapes instead of standing, so the bag sits close to the body and packs flat.
  • Riveted handles. The handles are riveted where they meet the bag, the joint that carries the whole load.
  • Front pocket. The phone, keys and transit card stay out of the main compartment, where small things sink.
  • Two sizes. M and L share a height of 11.4 inches, and L adds width and depth.

Choosing a Soft Leather Tote Bag

A soft leather tote bag is the right call when the bag has to adapt to the day and not the other way round. It takes a sweater, a lunch box or a pair of flats without complaint, and an empty one rolls into a suitcase as the spare bag for the trip home. TORONATA lists a soft interior lining and a shoulder strap, so it carries in the hand or over the shoulder. What it does not do by itself is organize: add two or three zip pouches and a soft tote becomes as orderly as a structured one, with the front pocket kept for whatever you reach for every hour.

Alpine Sizes M and L

Both sizes stand 29 centimeters, about 11.4 inches, tall. M measures about 10.2 inches wide and 5.5 deep and weighs roughly a pound; L measures 11 inches wide and 6.5 deep at about 1.1 pounds. That inch in each direction is about a quarter more room inside, the difference between a day bag and a day bag plus a sweater. Choose M if you carry a wallet, an e-reader and a water bottle, and choose L if a lunch, a makeup bag or a change of shoes comes along.

Caring for Soft Leather

Soft leather marks more easily than a stiff, coated one and ages faster, which is the appeal: Tan darkens and takes a sheen where your hand and hip touch it, and Dark Brown keeps that history quieter. Store the bag filled with a towel so it does not crease along one fold, and rest it on a shelf, because a loaded tote left hanging by its handles for weeks stretches them. Pack heavy items over the middle of the base so the bag hangs evenly from both handles.

Laptops, Seasons and Everyday Use

Does a laptop fit in the Alpine? Not a 13 inch one. Those are about 12 inches wide, and the larger Alpine measures 11 inches across. A tablet, an e-reader or a slim notebook is the right scale for this bag.

Is a soft leather tote bag good for every day? Yes, if your days vary. It handles an irregular load better than a stiff bag does and weighs about a pound empty. If your load is the same papers every day, add a rigid pouch or a bag insert and it behaves like a structured tote.

When do people shop for a soft tote? Searches run highest from September through December and peak in November and December. That is gift season, and it is also when a roomier everyday bag starts earning its place, because gloves, a scarf and a hat need somewhere to go.
