Product Type: Cat Toys

No batteries, no switch and nothing to charge: the Pole Roller is a self play cat toy that runs on cat. A weighted roller sits under a spring wire topped with an orange ball, so every swat sends the ball whipping away while the base rocks straight back up for the next round, and a catnip ball rides in a window on the body.

  • Rights itself. The weight sits low in the base, so the roller swings back upright after a knock.
  • Spring wire ball. The orange ball keeps bobbing after each hit, so the motion carries on without you.
  • Catnip on board. One catnip ball is included, held in a little window just under the wire.
  • Two ways to play. Upright as a punching bag, or tipped on its side so it rolls on its wheels.

Self Play That Bounces Back

A self play cat toy has to keep answering back, or the cat wanders off. This one does it with physics rather than a motor: the heavy base pulls the roller upright every time, so a single swat starts a whole wobble, and the springy wire turns that wobble into a ball that dodges and returns. Pawsome Pets New York describes it swinging back and forth as cats punch it, which is exactly the rhythm a cat enjoys, hit, dodge, hit again. Laid on its side it changes character, rolling off on its wheels so the cat has to chase it down.

How Often Can Cats Have Catnip

How often can cats have catnip? About once or twice a day is plenty. A cat that responds usually has a lively spell of around ten minutes, then goes quiet to the smell for a while, often half an hour or more, before it works again. Leaving catnip out all day simply dulls the effect. Roughly one cat in three does not react to catnip at all, which is inherited rather than a sign anything is wrong, and those cats still get the full game from the spring ball.

Small Footprint, Tall Reach

From the maker's photo, the roller measures 2.5 inches wide and 2.25 inches deep, with a body 3.2 inches tall and the ball topping out 9.5 inches off the floor. It fits in a studio corner or between a sofa and a side table, and with no motor its only sound is the gentle knock of the base. Now and then, look over the wire and the ball, and put the toy away if the ball ever works loose, since small parts are for batting, not chewing.

Pole Roller Around the House

Does catnip work on kittens? Usually not until somewhere around three to six months old, so a young kitten may ignore the catnip ball entirely. The bobbing orange ball needs no such wait.

What keeps the catnip fresh? The smell comes from an oil that fades in open air, so store the toy in a sealed bag or jar between sessions. Rolling the catnip ball gently between your fingers wakes the scent back up.

Is it noisy on hard floors? There is no motor to hum, only the base rocking and the wheels rolling. A small rug under it softens even that, which makes it a good pick for night owls in apartments.
