An oval gemstone held between two curved bars, as if the metal were cradling it, makes this birthstone necklace feel modern rather than traditional. Desiregem cuts each stone at 6x8mm and offers five: hessonite garnet, African amethyst, citrine, green onyx and London blue topaz, on an 18K gold plated chain you can wear at 15, at 18 or anywhere between.
- Month by stone. Garnet for January, amethyst for February, citrine for November, blue topaz for December.
- Easy to see. At 6x8mm the oval reads clearly from conversation distance.
- Nickel weight pendant. About 4.9 grams in all, close to a US nickel at 5 grams.
Choosing a Birthstone Necklace by Month
A birthstone necklace works best when the stone fits the month and the color fits the person wearing it. Four of the five stones here belong to the modern birthstone calendar, so January, February, November and December birthdays are covered, and green onyx is the choice for someone who simply loves green.
If the birthday falls in another month, choose by favorite color instead; a necklace that matches someone's taste gets worn far more often than one that matches the calendar.
Curved Bars That Hold the Oval
The oval sits between two arcs of metal that open at the sides, so light enters the faceted stone from more directions than a closed setting allows, and the color glows rather than going dark at the edges. The bars also give the pendant a clean, architectural outline that works with tailored shirts as well as soft knits.
Desiregem lists the metal as 18K gold plated brass, a layer of gold over a brass base rather than solid gold. The pendant hangs from a loop at the top of one bar, so it swings gently but settles facing forward.
Hessonite, African Amethyst and London Blue
Desiregem uses trade names that tell you about color. Hessonite is a variety of garnet, and in these photos it reads as a deep reddish brown. African amethyst is the name for darker, more saturated purple amethyst. London blue topaz is the deepest, inkiest of the blue topaz shades, closer to navy than sky. Citrine is a golden yellow quartz that warms instantly against the gold tone.
Oval Birthstone Pendant for Gifting
When do birthstone necklace searches peak? Search interest climbs every November, peaks in December and rises again in May; for a birthday, ordering a few weeks ahead of the date makes sense.
What if her birthstone is not one of the five? Pick the stone in her favorite color. Many people wear a birthstone necklace for the color long after anyone asks which month it stands for.
Is the stone faceted or smooth? Faceted. The close-up photos show cut facets across the oval, which is what lets the bars' open sides catch light inside the stone.
