Buttered carrots reach the table still hot out of this bowl, and the shape is the whole reason. At 8.7 inches across and 3.5 deep it runs unusually deep for its width, which is the line between a vegetable bowl and a salad bowl.
- Deep for its width At 3.5 inches the contents sit in a column rather than spreading into a thin layer.
- Heat stays in the middle A deep load has less surface exposed to the room, so it cools more slowly than a flat one.
- Pattern on the rim The blue decoration sits at the edge, where food never covers it.
Depth Is a Temperature Decision
Spread a pound of green beans across a wide shallow dish and most of them touch air. Put the same pound in something 3.5 inches deep and only the top layer does. Surface area is what loses heat, so a deeper bowl keeps a vegetable course warm for longer without anybody covering it. The cost is that the bottom of the load is harder to see, which matters if you are serving something you want to look at rather than something you want to stay hot.
Where the Blue Sits
The Anatolia Blue decoration runs as a band around the rim rather than across the well. That placement is deliberate on a serving piece: the moment food goes in, anything printed in the base disappears, while a rim pattern stays visible from the first spoonful to the last. It also means the bowl reads as decorated when it is full, which is when people are actually looking at it.
Sized to Be Passed Around
Narumi makes this shape for hospitality service, and 8.7 inches is the size that gets passed. It is small enough that one person can lift it with one hand and pass it along without setting it down between neighbors. If what you want is a bowl to dress and toss a salad in, this is the wrong depth to width ratio and the tossing will be cramped.
Passing, Washing and the Pattern
Is 8.7 inches big enough for a family meal? For a side it is. Three and a half inches of depth over that width gives roughly 60 ounces to a sensible fill line, which covers a vegetable course for four or five without a refill.
Will the rim pattern fade in a dishwasher? Decoration fired under the glaze sits below the surface that a detergent touches, so it does not abrade. What does wear on any decorated china is decoration applied on top of the glaze, which feels slightly raised if you run a fingernail across it.
Does a deep bowl need a bigger serving spoon? Yes, and it is worth checking before the meal rather than during it. A 3.5 inch depth means a short serving spoon buries its handle, so the one you reach for should be long enough to keep your fingers clear of the food.
