Serving Bowl

A serving bowl is built for the middle of the table, and its shape does the real work: a deep body keeps a hot vegetable hot by exposing less of it to the room, an oblong one carries over half a gallon along the table's edge, and a rimless coupe turns its full thirteen inches into usable surface. Use the deep bowl for anything that must arrive warm and the wide ones for salads and shared courses. Choose by the course rather than the capacity, because two bowls holding the same volume behave differently the moment food goes in.
