Product Type: Necklaces

This necklace closes at the front. A brass bar slips through a round ring right under the collarbone, and from that toggle hang a textured brass disc, a small glass bead and a long labradorite point capped in brass. The chain is a satellite chain, fine links interrupted by tiny beads, which glitters lightly all the way around. TARA Projects, a fair trade organization working with artisan families in northern India since the 1970s, makes it. Few necklaces show off a color-changing stone this well.

  • Clasp in front. No reaching behind the neck: you fasten it while looking in the mirror.
  • Stone that flashes. Labradorite turns from smoky gray to a streak of blue as it moves.
  • 18 inches long. The chain rests near the collarbone and the drop falls below it.

What Is a Lariat Necklace?

A lariat is a necklace with a drop that hangs down from the front instead of a pendant fixed at the bottom of a loop. This one gets there with a toggle, so the closure itself becomes the centerpiece and the stone dangles from it. The vertical line it draws flatters V-necks, open collars and plain crew neck tees alike, and because the clasp is in front, it always sits centered.

Labradorite Necklace That Flashes Blue

What is labradorite? It is a feldspar mineral whose thin internal layers bend light, so at the right angle a dark gray stone lights up with blue, sometimes green or a golden yellow. Jewelers call that effect labradorescence. On a lariat it shows best, because the point swings and turns as you walk, catching the flash again and again. Look for it in daylight by a window; under warm lamps the stone reads softer and grayer.

Labradorite is a 6 to 6.5 stone by Mohs hardness, firm enough for regular wear but softer than quartz, so store it apart from harder stones.

Styling the Front Toggle

The toggle can be worn as the feature or tucked into a collar so only the drop shows. Pair it with small studs and let the necklace do the talking, or add a short plain chain above it for a quick layered look. With a heavy knit, wear it over the sweater, where the satellite beads catch the light.

Labradorite Lariat Questions

Does the toggle come undone on its own? The weight of the stone keeps the bar pulled across the ring, so it stays closed while you wear it. Slip the bar fully through each time.

Why do no two stones look alike? Labradorite is natural, and the strength and color of the flash vary from stone to stone, so each point is slightly different from the photographs.

Can labradorite go in water? A quick rinse is fine: lukewarm water with a little gentle dish soap, then a dry cloth right away. Skip soaking, ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals, which can dull the surface.
