Product Type: Earrings

The plain round hoop is the earring you forget you are wearing, and that is exactly its job. This one is a slim tube of brass plated in 14K gold, open at the back so a post slides through the lobe and locks behind it, and it comes in two sizes: a small that measures 2.5 cm, about 1 inch across, and a large at 4.5 cm, about 1.8 inches.

  • Two true sizes. The small is roughly the width of a US quarter; the large is a touch wider than a golf ball.
  • Sterling silver backs. The piece resting behind your lobe is silver, not plated base metal.
  • Recycled brass core. The maker states the brass is reclaimed metal, melted down and reworked before plating.
  • Round tube profile. A rounded wire reflects light all the way around, so the hoop reads bright from the side as well as the front.

Gold Plated Hoop Earrings in Two Sizes

Gold plated hoop earrings in a small and a large let you pick by what you want the hoop to do. The small one frames the lobe and keeps clear of collars, scarves and phone calls, which makes it the pair to leave in from the first coffee to the last email. The large drops clearly below the ear and swings a little when you turn your head; on the model it sits about level with the jaw corner, and it carries an outfit on its own the way a statement necklace would.

If you wear your hair down most days, lean large, since a small hoop tends to disappear under it. If you wear it up or short, the small has all the presence it needs.

Keeping 14K Plating Bright

Plating is a thin skin of 14K gold over brass, so its life depends on friction and chemistry more than on time. Put the hoops on after lotion, sunscreen and perfume have dried, and take them off ahead of a workout, a swim or a hot tub, where sweat, chlorine and salt work on the surface. A dry, soft cloth after wearing keeps the shine longer than any cleaner will, and storing the pair on its own stops harder pieces from scratching it.

Wearing the Small and Large Hoops

Should gold plated hoops come off before a shower? Yes. Hot water carries soap and shampoo across the plating every day, and that film dulls it faster than wear does, so the hoops last noticeably longer when they live on a dish by the sink while you shower.

Are the backs sterling silver too? Only the backs. The hoop itself is plated brass and the backs are sterling silver, which is why you see a slightly cooler metal behind the lobe in the photographs.

Do the small and the large pair well? With a second hole, yes. Put the large in the first hole and the small above it; the matching tube profile makes them read as one set rather than two purchases.

Is the large too heavy for everyday wear? The large is still a slim tube rather than a solid band, so it moves easily on the post; if your lobes are sensitive, start with a few hours and build up the way you would with any new pair.
