Product Type: Earrings

A pearl earring with a sense of humor. The hoop is shaped like a J: a post goes through the lobe, the bar runs straight down, curves under and climbs back up, and a white freshwater pearl rests in the bottom of that curve like a marble in a cupped hand. It measures 3 cm long and 1.5 cm wide, about 1.2 by 0.6 inch, in brass plated with 14K gold.

  • Pearl held, not hung. The pearl sits inside the J, so it stays put and faces forward.
  • Freshwater pearls. Cultured in freshwater mussels, each with its own glow and shape.
  • Small and graphic. At just over an inch long it reads modern without being loud.
  • Silver backs, brass bar. Sterling silver backs and a bar the maker says comes from recycled brass.

Freshwater Pearl Earrings with a Modern Line

Freshwater pearl earrings are usually studs or drops, and this pair is neither. The straight bar draws a clean vertical line from the lobe, and the pearl at the bottom turns that line into a tiny, deliberate full stop. It is the pearl earring for people who find classic pearls a little too polite, and it looks especially sharp with short hair, slicked back hair or a low bun.

Because the pearl is cradled by the curve, it does not swing or twist, so it always shows its best side to the camera and to whoever you are talking to.

What the J Shape Does for the Pearl

The curve under the pearl is also a guard. Metal sits between the pearl and anything it might knock against, like a door frame, a phone or a car seat headrest, so the pearl takes fewer bumps than one hanging free. Pearls rate only about 2.5 to 4.5 on the hardness scale, softer than most things they meet, so that small guard earns its keep. Keep them in a soft pouch, away from rings and chains that could scratch the nacre.

The J Hoop and Its Pearl

What are freshwater pearls? They are pearls grown in freshwater mussels, usually in lakes and ponds, where one mussel can grow several pearls at once, each one made of nacre laid down layer by layer.

Why is the hoop shaped like a J? The shape lets the bar pass behind the pearl and up its back, so the pearl appears to float in front of the metal. It is a design choice that makes one pearl look larger and brighter than a bare post setting could.

Will each pearl look the same as the photos? Expect the same white color and size, with tiny differences in shape and surface. No two freshwater pearls are identical, and that small variation is how you know they are natural.
