Product Type: Pet Apparel

Thirty percent wool is the number that decides whether a pet sweater is warm or just thick. This one is a wool and acrylic cable knit in warm grey, cut to go over a harness rather than under one.

Thirty Percent Wool Is The Number That Matters

Acrylic on its own traps air but does nothing with moisture, so a dog that works up heat ends up damp inside its own sweater. Blending 30 percent wool with 70 percent acrylic puts a fiber in there that moves moisture out, while the acrylic keeps the price and the washing sane.

Cut To Go Over A Harness

A sweater worn under a harness gets compressed flat, which removes the trapped air that was doing the insulating. This one is cut to layer over the top, so the knit keeps its loft and the harness still sits where it was measured to sit.

Eight Sizes, Measured At The Chest

Size is set by chest girth and back length, not by weight. Measure around the widest part of the chest, then from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, and match both against the table.

Chest fit and back length for the cable knit dog sweater
Size Chest fits Back length
XS 10.2 to 11.8 inches 8.7 inches
Small 11.8 to 15.7 inches 10.6 inches
Medium 13.8 to 17.3 inches 12.2 inches
Large 15.7 to 21.3 inches 15 inches
XL 18.1 to 24.4 inches 17.3 inches
XXL 20.5 to 26.8 inches 18.5 inches
3XL 22 to 28.3 inches 20.1 inches
4XL 24.4 to 30.7 inches 21.7 inches

Hand Wash Only, And Why

Wash it by hand in cold water with soap, then line dry. Wool felts when it meets heat and agitation together, and felting is not reversible: the sweater comes out a size smaller and stays there. This is the one care instruction on the product that is not negotiable.

Where A Wool Blend Is The Wrong Layer

Knit is warm and it is not waterproof, so this is a dry cold garment rather than a rain layer. Cable knit also has open stitchwork, which snags on claws, branches and Velcro. And a dog with a wool sensitivity should be in pure acrylic instead.

Cable Knit Sweater Questions

What is it made of? Thirty percent wool and seventy percent acrylic.

Can it go in a washing machine? No. Hand wash cold and line dry; a machine cycle felts the wool content permanently.

What if my dog is between two sizes? Match the back length first. A sweater that is too long rides up and bunches at the shoulders, which is harder to live with than one slightly wide.
