A travel carrier is judged over the whole journey rather than at any single moment in it, which means the questions are about the car, the waiting room and the walk between them rather than about carrying comfort alone. A soft body that gives a little stows into a footwell or under a seat where a rigid shell will not, a padded base gives the animal something to settle onto instead of a hard floor, and a zip the animal cannot open from the inside is worth more than any other closure feature. Take the animal on a short trip in it before the long one, since a carrier introduced on the day of a journey becomes part of what the animal is anxious about.
