Stretch Crop Top

These are cut from the same knit as the printed underwear and finished with flat seams, which is the detail that decides whether a crop top can be worn against skin all day. A flat seam is butted rather than overlapped, so there is no ridge running under the arm.

What A Flat Seam Changes

A conventional seam joins two panels with an allowance pressed to one side, leaving a raised edge on the inside. On a loose garment that is irrelevant. On something cut close and worn against skin, that ridge sits under the arm and along the side for however long the garment is on, and it is the reason a lot of close-fitting tops are uncomfortable for reasons the wearer cannot locate.

A flat seam joins the panels edge to edge and covers the join with stitching that lies level with the fabric. There is nothing to feel and nothing to press a line through an outer layer, which is what makes the same top work as a base layer and as the outer garment.

Where The Hem Lands

  • Above the natural waist reads as deliberate. A crop hem that stops at the narrowest point defines the waist and looks intentional.
  • At the waist reads as a short top. Landing exactly on the waistband is the one position that looks like a sizing error rather than a design.
  • The hem has no band. The same bonded finish used on the underwear means nothing grips, so the hem stays where the fabric sits rather than being held at one circumference.

Buying It As A Set

Some of these are printed to match a panty in the same design, and because both are sublimated in the same process the two halves fade at the same rate rather than drifting apart over a year. That is the practical argument for buying a set together rather than adding the second piece later, when the first has already been through fifty washes.

Worn Alone Or Underneath

The absence of an internal ridge is what lets one garment do both jobs. Under a shirt or an open jacket, there is nothing to print a line through the outer layer. Worn on its own, the same finish means the inside looks as considered as the outside, which is not true of a garment with pressed allowances showing at the armhole.

It also means the top can be worn for a long stretch without the low-level irritation that a conventional seam produces under the arm. That is the practical difference between a crop top bought for a photograph and one bought to wear through a day.

Sizing And Care

Elastane content means the top is drafted smaller than the body and holds its shape under tension, so take your usual size rather than sizing up for comfort. The same knit dries in a couple of hours and asks for the same treatment as the rest of the four-way stretch range: cool water, no wringing, no dryer.
