Fine hair slips out of anything too slick and creases under anything too tight, so the trick is choosing by fabric and size. Crushed velvet has a short pile that grabs a ponytail on slippery strands while the fabric cushions the band. Washed satin works the other way: its smooth face lets hair glide, so twist it on softly and let the gathered fabric do the holding. For small jobs, mini bobby pins tame a grown out fringe or a twist above the ear without a long tail poking out the far side.
