Everything else this maker sells is built for the body, and body skin forgives things a face does not. This is the one bottle in the range meant for the face, and it arrives carrying three separate actives: vitamin C, an alpha hydroxy acid from apple extract, and witch hazel. That combination deserves a slower start than the label suggests.

Facial skin is thinner, busier and far more visible than the skin on an arm, and it reacts to things a shin would ignore entirely. A formula that is unremarkable on a leg can be a great deal on a face, which is the reason to read this bottle differently from everything else on the shelf beside it.

Three Actives in One Bottle

Vitamin C is an antioxidant. Apple extract supplies an alpha hydroxy acid, which loosens the bonds between surface cells. Witch hazel is an astringent carrying tannins that make the surface feel briefly taut. Each is common on its own; the point worth making is that you are getting all three at once rather than choosing between them.

Start Slower than the Label Says

The instruction is to use it daily. Two or three mornings a week for the first two weeks tells you far more, because if something disagrees with you, a daily start makes it impossible to work out which of the three it was. Build up once the skin has settled rather than before.

Daylight Is the Other Half

An acid leaves treated skin more reactive to sunlight for a while afterward. Wearing a sunscreen over the top is the ordinary companion habit for any acid, and on a face it is not optional in the way it might be under a sleeve. Anyone unwilling to add that step is better off with a plain oil.

Questions About the Vitamin C Serum

Can it be used with another acid or a retinol? Not on the same day while you are starting out. Alternate them until you know how your skin responds.

Does the witch hazel dry the face? It can on skin that is already dry or reactive. The oils around it offset that for most people; patch test if you are unsure.

Morning or evening? Either works. If you use it in the morning, wear sunscreen over it.

How many drops? Three or four, warmed between the fingers and pressed in rather than dragged across the skin.
