Black Gown

Black reads as formal from any distance and gives back almost nothing to a camera, because a lens cannot separate one black surface from another in low light. Whatever a black gown has to offer in a photograph has to be texture rather than color: beadwork, crystal, a change in the weave. A flat black gown photographs as a silhouette, which is occasionally the intention and worth choosing on purpose.
